    The National Memorial Day Parade, presented by the American Veterans Center, is held annually in Washington DC, and is an opportunity for thousands of patriotic Americans to come together and honor those who have sacrificed so much in service to our country.

    The event celebrates all those who have served in uniform from the American Revolution to Operation Iraqi Freedom, and seeks to educate the public about the meaning of this hallowed day.

    The National Memorial Day Parade will step off at the corner of Constitution Avenue and 7th Streets, NW. It will proceed west down Constitution, past the White House, ending at 17th Street.

    The parade featured celebrity veterans and veterans supporters, including:

    – Grand Marshal J.R. Martinez

    – Honorary Grand Marshals U.S. Army veterans Robert Griffin Jr. and Jacqueline Griffin, along with Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III

    – Actors Gary Sinise and Joe Mantegna

    – Musical performances by Taylor Hicks (American Idol season 5 winner), Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan, and country music star Trace Adkins

    – Veterans of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American aviators in U.S. military history.

    – “Ace” pilots of the Korean War

    – Nearly 1,000 active duty service members from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

    FOSE 2013 opened its doors today for its annual three day event, kicking off with a keynote presentation delivered by General Stan McChrystal. New education sessions, including the App Arcade and FOSETV, gained popularity in the exhibit hall as attendees gathered around to be the first to see cutting-edge apps and hear technology leaders discuss hot topics in the government arena. The annual event gathers government and industry attendees to learn about the emerging technologies, policies and best practices in government information technology (IT). FOSE 2013 is taking place May 14-16 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

    Each year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival commemorates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the city of Washington, DC. The gift and annual celebration honor the lasting friendship between the United States and Japan and the continued close relationship between the two countries.

    Todays National Cherry Blossom Festival has grown from modest beginnings into the nations greatest springtime celebration. A group of American school children reenacted the initial planting and other activities, effectively holding the first festival in 1927. The festivities grew again in 1935, sponsored by civic groups in the nations capital. The Festival was expanded to two weeks in 1994 to accommodate a diverse activity schedule during the blooming period. Over the years, millions have participated in Festival events and viewed the flowering cherry trees. In 2012, the Festival expanded to five weeks (from 16 days in recent previous years) to provide a grand tribute to the 100-year anniversary of the gift of trees. Today, more than 1.5 million people visit Washington, DC each year to admire the blossoming cherry trees and participate in diverse programming that heralds spring in the nations capital.

    Designed to offer year-round enjoyment to the public in one of the preeminent locations on the National Mall, the National Gallery Sculpture Garden includes seventeen works from the Gallerys growing collection as well as loans for special exhibitions.

    Installations include Claes Oldenburgs Typewriter Eraser, Scale X (model 1998, fabricated 1999), and Joan Miros Personnage Gothique, Oiseau-Eclair (1974, cast 1977), as well as new acquisitions.

    Cost: $20 for Grandstand Seating; FREE along Parade route.

    The 2013 National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade is Saturday, April 13 from 10:00am to 12:00 noon, rain or shine. One of DCs largest spectator events, the energy-filled Parade runs along Constitution Avenue from 7th to 17th streets, NW, and is televised live.

    Vibrant costumes and blossom-inspired decor created the look of nations premier springtime parade. Giant colorful helium balloons, elaborate floats, marching bands from across the country, and performers burst down Constitution Avenue in a grand spectacle of music and showmanship seen only once a year during the Festival.

    Enjoyed the celebrity performances and appearances, including Grammy award winning artist Mya, Disneys Coco Jones, American Idols Elliott Yamin, and more.

    Blue Like Me(Color Me Blue) – Indian Dance Performance is a cultural event featuring global artist, Siona Benjamin, from Bombay. Siona Benjamin now lives in the US and her work reflects her background of being brought up Jewish in a predominantly Hindu and Muslim India. Siona will perform traditional Indian dances with two professional Indian dancers and South Asian Student Association(SASA) members.

    Siona Benjamin collaborates with classical Indian dancers who assume the roles of mystical characters in her work and share their hybrid and transcultural identities in a performance entitled: Rang de Nila (Color Me Blue). The performance is choreographed to Indian/Jazz/Hip-hop/ Bollywood music. Benjamin will speak about her work following the performance. Admission is Free.
