    President Millard Fillmore established the Presidio for military use in November 1850. During the 1850s and 1860s, Presidio-based soldiers fought Native Americans in California, Oregon, Washington and Nevada.

    The outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 re-emphasized the importance of Californias riches and the military significance of San Franciscos harbor to the Union. This led, in 1862, to the first major construction and expansion program at the Presidio since the United States acquired it.

    On Dec. 12, 1884, the War Department designated 9 acres, including the site of the old post cemetery, as San Francisco National Cemetery. It was the first national cemetery established on the West Coast and, as such, marks the growth and development of a system of national cemeteries extending beyond the battlefields of the Civil War.

    In 1989, the Presidio closed as a military entity and was transferred to the National Park Service in October 1994.

    San Francisco National Cemetery was listed as a National Historic Landmark as part of the Presidio in 1962.

    Rolling green lawns and colorful showy blooms highlight the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden. In fact, hardly a day passes when some species is not in full bloom, with more than 3,500 plantings and 189 varieties featured.

    San Joses 5 1/2 acre Municipal Rose Garden – a one-time prune orchard – is today one of the most attractive of its kind in the world, drawing thousands of visitors each year. The garden is exclusively devoted to shrubs of the rose family and features over 4,000 rose shrubs with 189 varieties represented. Hybrid – teas comprise 75% of the plantings. These shrubs are characterized by a single high centered bloom per stem.

    Arriving at Grand Canyon West Rim, you will be greeted by the Indians of the Hualapai Nation, who will welcome you to their homeland. They look forward to sharing their culture and history with you.

    There are three sections at Grand Canyon West: Eagle Point, Guano Point, and the Hualapai Ranch. Eagle Point contains the most notable attraction, the Grand Canyon Skywalk(no cameras are allowed), a glass bridge that suspends 4,000 feet above the Grand Canyon floor.

    You can also experience the Native American culture. There is a walking tour through authentic Native American dwellings, an amphitheater with live Native American performances from multiples tribes continuously throughout the day, and handmade Native American jewelry and crafts.

    You could also do other tours, such as the helicopter flight and Colorado River boat ride.

    The Bureau of Reclamation has conducted tours through the Hoover Dam and powerplant since 1937. Today, close to 1,000,000 visitors a year take the tour and millions more drive across the dam.

    The dam is located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas. Take US Highway 93 to Nevada State Route 172. The dam is on the Nevada-Arizona border.

    Hoover Dam is a testimony to a countrys ability to construct monolithic projects in the midst of adverse conditions. Built during the Depression; thousands of men and their families came to Black Canyon to tame the Colorado River.

    It took less than five years, in a harsh and barren land, to build the largest dam of its time. Now, years later, Hoover Dam still stands as a world-renowned structure. The Dam is a National Historic Landmark and has been rated by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of Americas Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders.

    San Luis Reservoir was constructed as a storage reservoir for the federal Central Valley Project and the California State Water Project.

    The Romero Overlook Visitors Center commands a dramatic panorama of the 385-foot-tall rock and earthfill dam that stores 652 billion gallons of water in San Luis Reservoir.

    Watch a multi-slide presentation bring to life the facilitys 1962 groundbreaking ceremony presided over by President John F. Kennedy and Governor Edmund G. Brown, Sr., or you can request to watch a video from a selection of water topics.

    Exhibits explain how this joint state-federal complex of facilities serves both the State Water Project and the federal Central Valley Project.
