    Virginia City is a town in Nevada, southeast of Reno. It is home to Victorian buildings built during a 19th-century mining boom.

    Explore the rich geological and cultural history of one of the great mines of the Comstock Lode! Go deep underground and discover how the miners of the Gold Rush extracted the wealth that made Virginia City famous. The gold and silver brought thousands across America to risk it all and seek their fortune.

    First staked in 1859, Virginia Citys Chollar Mine (later the Chollar-Potosi) was one of the leading producers on the Comstock. Over the next 80 years, miners blasted and carted out some $17 million in gold and silver. Discover how the mines were built, the geological significance of the rocks and what it meant to the men who dug here.

    To address transportation needs, William Sharon and his Bank of California partners incorporated the Virginia and Truckee Railroad Company in March 1868. The plan was to build the railroad between Virginia City and the Carson River (near present day Mound House) and extend it later to Carson City and Reno.

    The Nevada State Railroad Museum is a cultural resource dedicated to educating visitors and the community about Nevada railroad history. This mission is accomplished through the collection, preservation and interpretation on significant locomotives, rolling stock, artifacts, photographs and memorabilia directly related to railroads and railroading in Nevada.

    In addition to static exhibits, select pieces of equipment in the collection are restored and operated throughout the year to demonstrate steam and early gasoline technology and provide visitors with a first-hand experience with railroad history through the sights, sounds and sensations of a train ride.

Interpretive signs assist in understanding the history of the area. All views are accessible via paved walkways, and the restrooms are accessible, too. Parking can be difficult during busy summer months especially between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Please park legally, not along Highway 89.

    Vikingsholm is a magnificent summer castle owned by Mrs. Lora Knight that was completed in 1929.
